I saw Santa slide down a chimney. Why would he do something like that?

I saw Santa slide down a chimney. Why would he do something like that?

From Alfred at Christmas, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.

From Alfred’s journal

The Pruitt house put a Santa on the roof this year, the inflatable kind, and by Tuesday the fan had quit and half of him had folded into the chimney. Switch sat on the gutter watching the legs twitch in the wind and asked me what the man had done wrong. I told him nothing, that it was a story people tell, and then I sat there a while longer and could not account for the chimney part. I saw Santa slide down a chimney. Why would he do something like that? There is a door on the front of that house with a wreath on it. For years I thought the strangeness of people was in what they believed; I am less sure now, since they will tell you the whole thing cheerfully and never once mention the soot.
